FOODS YOU CAN AND THOSE YOU CANNOT EAT WITH BRACES

Braces are a popular orthodontic treatment to correct misaligned teeth for a well-aligned smile. They consist of wires, bands, and brackets that bind the teeth tightly to slowly shift them into their correct positions. Although getting braces is not a painful or complicated process, people who have them will tell you that the hardest part about them is the new diet you need to adjust to!

It is not like there is a hard-and-fast rule to what you can or cannot eat once you have braces. However, there are certain things to keep in mind while you decide on your diet after getting braces.

Since they are made of metal and kind of like a mesh, they will clearly be more difficult to clean. Regular brushing may not be able to clear out sticky and hard foods if they get stuck in your braces. ·

The sugar in sweet foods and drinks combines with saliva to form a clear layer called plaque. When left neglected for long, it turns into a hard substance called tartar, which cannot be removed without a dentist’s help. Wearing braces makes it difficult to thoroughly clean teeth and hence the chances of tartar developing are high. As such, it is better to avoid too many sugary foods and drinks.

Right after you get braces on your teeth, your mouth will be slightly sensitive for a few days. You might even have some pain in your teeth and gums, which will fade away as you get accustomed to wearing braces. Keeping this in mind, a dentist near you will recommend avoiding foods that place pressure on your teeth.

Another type of food that can cause damage to your newly fixed braces, is ice cream or ice. Extremely cold treats like that, can irritate the wireframe of the braces and cause damage. Also, ice cream is high in sugar and causes plaque.

Thick or dense foods that require a forceful bite, such as thick meats, hard rolls, etc., are better avoided. They increase pressure on your teeth and braces and may be responsible for a bracket coming loose, or worse.

Causing damage to your braces can prolong the treatment timespan substantially, which means you will be wearing them for longer than envisaged initially.

Apart from all types of foods mentioned above, everything else is alright to eat with braces. However, if you have recently gotten braces in Stony Plain, your dentist in Stony Plain will recommend these foods –

  • Soft fruits
  • Cooked or mashed vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Dairy products like milk, yogurt, and soft cheeses
  • Soups
  • Oatmeal
  • Soft grains like rice
  • Moist desserts
  • Egg preparations
  • Although the above-mentioned foods are allowed to be consumed right after getting braces, it is still advisable to make extra efforts to practice oral hygiene. Regular brushing, especially around the brackets of the braces, flossing, and rinsing your mouth with a good mouthwash, are extremely important habits even without braces. Hence, they assume even more importance now. In the absence of proper oral hygiene, while using braces, you are exposing yourself to many dental problems such as tooth decay, gum diseases, and cavities.

Foods to totally avoid when wearing braces are –

  • Citrus foods
  • Overly sweet foods
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Chewing gums
  • Crunchy foods like chips and pretzels
  • Hard candy
  • Being consciously aware that you have braces on will keep you in check automatically when you reach for foods that can damage your braces.
